Role Play – Little Red Riding Hood (Part II)

Due to mosquito fogging activity was being carried out on 24th July, the class was being cancelled. Therefore, there’s no blog update on 24th July (Thursday).

Today, I found a red sleeveless T-shirt with a hood. It is just the perfect outfit for Little Red Riding Hood. We managed to have 2 rounds of role play today though some of the children didn’t want to participate; I just let them be the audience.

The children tried their best to remember the scene and the words to say. Yet, I will still have to guide them most of the time.

The children having fun taking turns to play the role of the story.

Ee Wern: I'm the Red Riding Hood.

Wolf (Yi Fai): Hello. Where are you going?

Red Riding Hood: What big eyes you have!

Yi Xuan: My turn to be Red Riding Hood.

Red Riding Hood bumped into a wolf (Thong Xuan).

Red Riding Hood: What big ears you have!

Here come the wood cutter (Huey Xin) to chase away the wolf.

Game – Who Has Gone With the Wind
I noticed that the children still new to names of colours. They needed more practice. Therefore, I chose this game today, hopefully, they could link the colours with its name.

Before we start, we went through all the colours that we could possibly find on each other clothing. Then I guided them how we should play the game.

Teacher: Gone with the wind.
Children: Who has gone with the wind?
Teacher: The one with red colour on their clothes.
(Then those children who had red on their clothes will have to stand up and exchange seats with each other.)

We had a few rounds of this game so that the children could be familiar with it. Yet, some of them still needed to be reminded to look at their clothes for the colour being mentioned.

Role Play – Little Red Riding Hood

We went through the role in Little Red Riding Hood first. Then I suggested that we could do a role play about this. Some of the children volunteered themselves for the role in the story. We did one round to see how it goes.

However, the children were not that familiar with the flow of the story, therefore, I needed to guide them from parts to parts as well as the dialogue. Yet, the children enjoyed themselves quite a lot and laughed so loud.

We shall had this role play again on Thursday if possible with suitable costume on especially for the Little Red Riding Hood.

Book Sharing – The Lemons Are not Red by Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Colour – Red

I asked the children to bring anything red from home to share with their classmates. Unfortunately none of them brought any. So we just carried on with our activity today.

This week we are focusing on “red: colour. We went through a book about colours from all shades and things in red.

Then we discussed the story about “Little Red Riding Hood”. I introduced the main character in the story – Little Red Riding Hood, granny, the wolf and the wood cutter. The children try to tell the story yet, most of them only remember the wolf and not other parts of the story.

I take this opportunity to play them a short video about the story of the “Little Red Riding Hood”.

Review of the Rainbow Colour

We went through the colours of the rainbow again today. After the rainbow painting yesterday, the children could tell me more precisely of the arrangement of the rainbow colours.

Book Sharing – My Crayons Talk by Patricia Hubbard
I had shared this book with the class before, they could remember it. But this time, along with the colour theme, the children pay more attention to the colour mentioned in the book.

Book Sharing – I paint a Rainbow by David Plummer & John Archambault
This colourful book of rainbow was written in simple sentences with rhyming sound. The children enjoyed listening to it as well.

Drawing – Anything in colourful colours
I gave each of the children some papers. They could draw anything they wanted provided that they needed to colour their pictures in colourful colours.

Some of the children started to draw rainbows while some draw pictures that they saw from the book I shared.

We shall start and focus on “red” colour next week.

Book Sharing – Colour Dance by Ann Jonas

Before moving in to our activity today, I shared an interesting book with the children today. It is called Colour Dance. In this book, it introduces the primary colour – red, yellow and blue. With these 3 colours, the children can actually make it into all kinds of different shades of colours.

After reading the book, I brought in 3 primary water colour – red, yellow and blue. With these 3 colours, I demonstrated how we could paint a rainbow. The arrangement of the colours of the rainbow is: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

These are some of the scenes of the children painting:

Today, I introduced the colour of the rainbow. Some of the children could tell some of the colours of the rainbows but not all of it. As a result, I guided them to label the colours on the rainbow.

Then, I asked the children to tell me what colour is their favourite colour. They have to tell me in full sentences – My favourite colour is _____ .

Edmund: My favourite colour is blue.
Yee Hin: My favourite colour is blue.
Thong Xuan: My favourite colour is pink.
Ee Wern: My favourite colour is brown.
Huey Xin: My favourite colour is red.
Jayden: My favourite colour is white.
Kai Heng: My favourite colour is white.
Pin Jee: My favourite colour is dark blue.
Zen Hong: My favourite colour is red.

The children are going on a field trip to the National Zoo tomorrow. Therefore, we shall do an activity about rainbow on Thursday. As a result, there will be no blog update for 16th July (Wednesday).

Choosing a Title & Book Sharing

Today, we are starting with a brand new topic – colours. We needed to give a name to our theme. Therefore, I guided the children to think of a name for their theme.

These were the themes suggested:
-          Happy colours
-          Wonderful colours
-          Beautiful Colours
-          Rainbow colours

Each of them only has 2 votes. At last, 2 topics were chosen – Beautiful colours & rainbow colours. So I asked if we could combine these two topics and make into one. The children agreed. Therefore, our new topic called – Beautiful Rainbow Colours.

Book Sharing – A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni

This is a book about a chameleon who wishes to have a colour of his own. However, his wish was not granted. Yet, he found another chameleon which is willing to go along with him. Therefore, whenever the two of them go, there will always be 2 chameleons with the same shades of colours. Chameleon is happy about it.

As we still got a little time left, I draw the outline of the chameleon for the children to colour it with the colours that they preferred.

Tuna Sandwich Making

The children had decided “colour” as their next topic. We shall start learning about colours from next Monday onwards. Today would be the final activity for Yummy, yummy Food” – tuna sandwich making.

I took out the ingredients that we bought from Tesco supermarket yesterday – butter head lettuce, tomatoes, bread, cheese & tuna in tin can.

I have soaked the butter head lettuce and the tomatoes in a big bowl. I got 2 children to help to wash the lettuce while I hold the children’s hand while slicing the tomatoes with the knife.

Then, I demonstrated how I could place all the ingredients onto the bread and cut it into a triangle shape. After that, each of them takes turns to do the tuna sandwich on their own.

All the children enjoyed eating the tuna sandwich.

Pin Jee & Huey Xin helping out to wash all the butterhead lettuce.

Kai Heng spreading the tuna on his bread.

Zen Hong is helping himself with all the ingredients.

Yee Hin is placing all the ingredients onto his bread while Edmund looks on.

"I eat tomato," Pin Jee said.

Yi Fai is doing a tuna sandwich for himself.

Field Trip – To Tesco Supermarket

The children got up at around 2:30pm from their afternoon nap and they were ready to go to Tesco Supermarket to shop for the tuna sandwich ingredients’.

Thong Xuan: I’m so exciting. (I told her is “excited” and I asked her why.)
Thong Xuan: Because we are going for shopping!

We headed for Tesco supermarket around 2:45pm. We reached there about 15 minutes later. First, we headed for the bakery session to look for bread. Edmund & Jayden were in charged of it. Easily they spotted the bread.

Edmund found the bread and put it into the trolley.

After that, we headed to the fresh vegetables and fruits department to look for lettuce and tomatoes. Pin Jee & Yi Fai felt happy when they found the lettuce. On the other hand, Huey Xin & Yee Hin got a bit confused with the tomatoes as most of them were quite raw. All the children helped to look for the red, ripe tomatoes.

"Look at the lettuce,"Teacher Ng said.

"Pick the red and nice one," Teacher Ng said.

Yee Hin: Can we take this?

Jayden & Edmund helping to send the vegetables for weighing.

Then, Zen Hong & Kai Heng are looking for cheese. They were amazed with all sorts of choices and not sure what to choose. We all help to look for the suitable cheese we needed.

Which cheese to buy?

Lastly, Yi Xuan, Thong Xuan & Ee Wern needed to look for tuna. We moved to the canned food department. They were distracted by others canned food. However, they still managed to spot the tuna. We bought 2 difference types of tuna.

The group is discussing which to pick.

We headed back to the school around 4:15pm. Wow, shopping is really fun!

Setting Up a Supermarket (Part III)

I was the cashier for 2 days in a row. The children also requested if they could take my role being the cashier. Of course, I said. Yet, how shall I delegate the role fairly? Finally, I decided to draw lots. Thong Xuan suggested that if we could have another cashier just for fruits. I said, yes.

As a result, we have 2 cashiers at the same time. Each person will be the cashier for about 5 minutes. They were satisfied.

Setting Up a Supermarket (Part II)

Trip to Tesco: We have planned for a trip to Tesco supermarket on this coming Thursday to shop for some ingredients to make tuna sandwich on Friday. Therefore, I have divided the children into 5 groups according to the ingredients that we needed. Basically we needed bread, tuna & mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and cheese.

Notices had been pasted into their message book. Parents kindly take note of this.

The children brought some other empty food boxes here today. Since the items are getting more, I labeled the price directly onto the box itself. It would much convenience for the children to count according to the money they have in hand. I still act as the cashier today as there were some absentees yesterday. They might not sure how’s the flow of the activity.

Some of the children were more aware of the amount of money in hand and whether it’s sufficient to buy. However, some of them just randomly take whatever they think they want without looking at the amount of money in hand.

With this opportunity, I wish to teach the children to be more aware of what they could take according to their budget in hand. It might be quite abstract yet hopefully this will create some awareness among the children especially when we try to educate them to spend wisely.

Setting Up a Supermarket

Some of the children got some empty boxes of cereals, biscuits, and an ice-cream box. I managed to find some empty milk carton. I brought in some toys fruits as well.

Before we start to set up, I introduced the currency that we used in Malaysia. I even showed the children some RM1, RM5, RM10 and also RM50. I used some blue colour paper to make some RM1, some green papers to make RM5 while some pink colour papers to make RM10 for the children to start off with.

I labeled the price of each item on the white board. With the money the children had in hand, they can choose the items within their budget.

I played the role of a cashier. The children learned to pick the items form the tables and queued up to make payment.

Thong Xuan is paying for the ice cream.

Yee Hin making payment for an orange.

Where did you buy food from?

Where did you buy food from?

We had done learned quite a lot about food. Therefore, today we would like to explore something else.

Teacher: Where do we buy food from?
Pin Jee: I don’t know.
Jayden: Supermarket.
Teacher: Yes, we can get food from supermarket or even the wet market or night market. How about setting up a supermarket here?
Zen Hong: How?

So I suggested that the children could bring some empty boxes of biscuits, cereals, ice-cream, or even empty cans or plastic bottles. Any used materials that they could find from home which suits the theme. Hopefully we could set up a simple supermarket and play with it on Monday.

Role Play – Cooking, Serving & Eating
This time round, I didn’t get another set of cooking set from the other class. I asked the children to play with those cooking sets or toys they could find in the class.

As I observed, this time round, the children could actually immersed themselves into the cooking role play. Some of them became cook. Some of them were customers who ordered food. The children had fun playing. They were quite reluctant to pack when time is up.
