Final Project

Today would be the final day for our thematic class for this year. We shall concentrate on the concert performance practice in November and December.

Basically today I just round up the facts and details that the children had learned so far and trying my best to get them to complete their crocodile art work. Those children who didn't bring their crocodile art work today, they could try their best to bring it back by Friday so that I could guide them to complete the rest of it.

On the other hand, I have promised the children that I will guide them to sew their felt elephant and shall let them bring it home by end of November while taking some time for concert practice.

Here, I would like to say "Thank you" to our lovely Starfruit class children who had walked with me through the year 2016 happily and I really enjoyed teaching them. Hopefully I shall have chance to meet them again in year 2017.

Goodbye for now. See you all next year.

Book Sharing & Folding Skills

Today, Zhuo Hwa brought a book to school to share with his fellow friends. It's a book on sounds made by the animals. We just browse through the book briefly.

After that, I gave each of them a piece of green colour paper (half an A4 paper) to be folded in to a fan shape. I guided the children to fold it in a big group and followed by checking their art work one by one.

For those who had got their crocodile cut by their parents, they could paste the green colour fan shape body with the head and tail. We shall continue with the rest of the art work on next Monday.

Note: School will be closed for Deepavali holiday on 28th October 2016 (Friday). Therefore, there's no blog update for tomorrow.

Book Sharing & Crocodile Art Work

Today, I shared 2 books with the children. One was brought by Shan Lin while one is mine.

Shan Lin got another book to share with the children today - Trunk Trouble by Felicity Carter and illustrated by Karen Sapp.

I also shared another book about crocodile with the children - Click, Clack, crocodile's back by Kathryn White and Joelle Dreidemy. The children had a good laugh at this funny story.

After the story sharing session, I gave the children back their crocodile's art work which I have already pasted onto the cardboard. I wanted the children to try to cut it out. However, it was not as expected. Therefore, I allowed them to bring it home to ask for help from their parents. Hopefully, everyone will bring back the crocodile's art tomorrow so that we could continue with it.

Book Sharing, Games and Art Work

Shan Lin brought us a short story books about "How Elephants lost their Wings". It's an Indian folk tales retold by Lesly Sims and illustrated by Katie Lovell.

Beside sharing Shan Lin's book, I also shared a book brought by Khai Hann - How do you hug a porcupine?

After that, I set the chairs again for the children to go through the "S" walking again. This time, I placed the chairs around the classrooms and the children needed to walk one round. For those who can't do it yesterday had shown improvement in walking in the "S" pattern and all the children cheered for them.

I have printed some art work for the children to colour. It's a head and tail of a crocodile. I shall paste it on a cardboard once the children were done with it.

Crocodile vs Alligator & Games

The children had watched the video comparing alligator and crocodile last week. Therefore, I guided the children to recall back the content of the video and shared what they remembered.

From the video, the children also noticed that the way crocodile moved in the water. It doesn't swim straight yet, it will swim in a "s" way, like a snake. Therefore, I divided the children into 3 big groups and put about 4 chairs in front of each group. The children needed to walk in a "s" pattern and come back. Most of the children could do it, however, some of them still couldn't complete the task ideally. I have to guide them in following the pattern personally.

I played 2 videos for the children to explore about crocodiles.

Video #1: ALLIGATORS | Animals for children. Kids videos. Kindergarten | Preschool learning

Video #2: Crocodile - My animal friends - Animal documentaries -Kids educational Videos

Along watching the video, I also guided the children to share what they watched and know about crocodiles. The children shared whatever they saw.

As we have another about 15 minutes left for today, I brought the children downstairs to the hall to watch a short story about "Elephant and Piggie - Can I play too?". I have to play the video twice with some elaboration in order for the children to understand the story.

Elephant Art (Part II)

The children's palm printing elephant art had dried up. Therefore, today, the children could add in details about the elephant. Before we start doing so, I guided them to tell me the parts of the body of an elephant. Basically, the children could tell me about the leg, ears, eyes, tails and the trunk. Therefore, I teach them another vocabulary today - tusk. Hopefully the children could pick up the words correctly.

Then, I gave them back their paper and the children added in the details of their elephant art.

Khai Hann: trunk is the long nose.
Yern Rou: The trunk can take water and drink.

Haowen: The elephant use the trunk to take the banana.
(It was not shown in the video. However, Haowen said he saw this before.)
Yi Tong: Elephant's trunk can hug.
Max: The elephant can hear. The kangaroo cannot hear. (He was referring to the story - Horton Hears a Who!)
Shan Lin: Elephant is very big and we are smaller.

After that, I took out a storybook to share with the class - The Great Cheese Robbery by Tim Warnes

After reading the story, I get the children to share one thing that they were afraid of.

Horton Hears a Who (part II)

Today, we continue with the Dr Seuss' story that we left out on yesterday. I quickly just reviewed back a little on the story line before I start. Hopefully this will help the children to link up the story. This time, the children got a little worried when I read until the page when Horton, the elephant,  was being tied up by the animals. The children kept asking if they could let the elephant go. Finally, when the last person on Who-ville managed to sound out some sound that the Kangaroo can hear, the other animals started to let go of Horton. The children were relief that they didn't put the elephant into the cage and other animals are protecting the Who-ville.

Then, I played them a short video clip about the facts on elephant.

Horton Hears a Who

Today, Yi Rou brought us 2 books by Dr Seuss. I'm not sure if the children could understand Dr Seuss' book. Anyhow, I picked one of it to read it to the children. The title of the book is "Horton Hears a Who".

We only managed to read half of it as the children started to wander off as many of them couldn't understand the story line. I have to stop and retell it in my own words with expression. Hopefully by doing so, the children could catch some of the story lines. We shall continue with it on the next day.

The next animal that we are going to explore is elephant.

I gave each of the children some black colour paper for them to cut into stripes so that they could paste them onto the body of the zebra. Then, they needed to leave some for its hair on the back of the head and its eye. Most of the children could follow instruction and they could manage to complete the art work without much help. Some needed some guidelines and methods in getting things done properly.

Here were some pictures taken during the activity:

Gaby: Got tails.
Shan Lin: Zebra can run very fast.
Yen Rou: Zebra eats grass.

Then, I guided them to recall about the name of the male and female zebra - stallion and mare. The baby zebra is called foal. Besides that, zebra lives in a group called herd.

After the short break for the class, the children were divided into groups to be seated. Then, I gave them an orange A4 paper with some white A4 cut paper to do the initial part of the zebra art.

After some guidance, the children managed to complete until the picture shown below for today.

We have to continue with this activity tomorrow.

Comparison of height

So far, we had learned about lion and giraffe. I also picked some vocabulary for the children to learn :

Vocabulary: lion, mane, giraffe, spots

Besides that, I also guided the children to describe the lion. They said it's big. Then, I get them to think about any description for giraffe. They came out with long legs and tall neck.

By looking at the information given on the board, I asked the children to try to see if they could make any sentences from it. I gave a sample for lion: Lion has mane. It is big.

The children needed to make some sentences for giraffe instead. Here were some answers given:
Shan Lin: Giraffe has spots.
Gaby: Giraffe has orangy brown spots.
Khai Hann: Giraffe has some spots.

The children mentioned about tall giraffe earlier. I asked the class to see who is the tallest in the class. Some of them raised their hands. Therefore, each time, I picked 2 children to compare their height. If any of them were shorter, they will need to go back to their seat. After a few rounds of comparison, we found out that Lucas is the tallest in the class.

During the comparison of the 2 children, I guided them to make use of the phrase: taller than

The next animal that I picked is zebra. We have another about 10 minutes left, I played them a video about zebra.
