Brown bear, brown bear what do you see?

As we moved on to brown colour, immediately I thought of this book from Eric Carle. A parent from another class even did some animals print out for this story. She borrowed the materials for me to carry out the activities in the class. I have counted, there are about 10 animals that we can used to carry out an activity according to the story.

As I read the story to the children, those children who were holding that particular animals would stand up and stand in line. The children listen and follow the instruction until we completed the whole story.

Then, all the children jumbled themselves up and stand in a line. I will give a start for the story and the children would follow the line from the story and see what's the animal that is standing next to him/her. We had this for 2 rounds before the children call it a day.

The children suggested that they could make a picture book like this one. Therefore, I get each child to name me an animal that they could put it into their picture book.

These were the animals that the children suggested: -
cat, fish, rabbit, snake, deer, bat, lion, bear, crocodile, tortoise, frog,

Book Sharing & Fun with strings art

Since we were doing the elephant art yesterday, I shared a story about colours that related to an elephant. However, this book is in Mandarin, therefore, I read it in Mandarin for the children to understand more about how the writer describe those colours.

Book Sharing - You are My Best Friend 《你是我最好的朋友》
The story is about a white mouse - Nana, who wish to make friends with elephants. However, everyone knows that elephant is scared of mouse. Nana believes that it was all the fault of Ah Bao, a leader of a naughty mouse gang, who always make fun of the elephant.

One day, Nana met an elephant called Momo. He was a blind elephant who can't see. Therefore, Nana will describe all the colours to Momo so that he could also feel it and as though he could see it.

When Ah Bao came to disturb both of them, Momo used all the colours that Nana thought him to teach Ah Bao and the gang a lesson. After that, Nana and Momo had some peaceful time playing together.

Since we have some time after the story sharing session, we did a colour art work by using strings and water colour.

The children will place the string into the colours that they wanted. However, I only prepared the primary colours for them - red, yellow and blue.

Then once they have dipped the string with colours, they will place it on one side of their drawing paper. They have to fold the paper into half and press hard before they pulled the string out from it. It will form a pattern.

The boys are colouring their string with water colour.

Huey Xin pressed her coloured string onto the paper while Ayden looked on.

Then, she pulled the coloured string.
The children like it very much as each of them will get a different picture out from it. After that, they will start to tell story of their pictures to their friends.

Then, we picked an animal that is grey in colour. The children all agreed to pick elephant. Therefore, we did an art work on grey.

This time, the children painted the grey water colour that I have mixed onto their palm and immediately printed it onto the drawing paper that I have prepared.

Once the paint has dried, the children could start to add on details to their art work.

Then the children colour the sheep in black so that they understand the link of the colour and its name.

I also prepared a quarter of the drawing paper for each child. Then I demonstrated by using varieties of crayons colours to colour on the drawing paper. Then on top of the colourful colours, I painted it with black crayons. The black crayons must covered all the colourful colours. Then I used the long toothpicks to draw pictures on it. The children were amazed to know that colours will appear from the black crayons layer.

With the demonstration done, the children quickly picked up those colourful crayons and started drawing on their drawing paper. After they had covered it with the black crayons, they were so eager to start off with their pictures.

Some of them painted their clouds pretty small while some of them painted their clouds pretty big. I told the children to try to paint the clouds on top of the paper and leave the other half of the paper empty. I wish to get the children to do some drawings to be pasted on the other half of the paper these 2 days.

New Colour - White

From the list of the colours that the children had voted earlier, the next colour would be white. The children were asked to look for things that is white in their class. They could also bring items that is white in colour to share with their friends next week.

Game - Goose, Goose, Geese
By now, the children should be quite familiar with the names of colours, therefore, we carried out this game today.

The children sat down in a small circle. Then I picked a child to go around touching their friend's head. By doing so, that child needed to say out a colour. Every round, I shall gave them a colour that the children needed to be aware of. Once they hear their friend mentioned about that colour, they have to stand up immediately and chase after that child. The one who is being chased needed to be fast enough to sit back at the empty seat.

Colours that I picked were the colours that the children had learned. Most of them were quite alert of what their friends are saying while some are quite slow in reaction. However, the kids had fun.

After the chase, the kids took some rest by lying on the floor. We call it a day.

Some groups were quite certain of the colours that they needed and they will search for the particular colours in the magazine. However, some needed some guidance in choosing the colours and also where to put their collage.

By end of the day, I could somehow visualize the pictures that they children wanted to do. Yet, they have not included any silver colours into their pictures.

Silver Object Project (Part I)

Jayden brought a silver magnet ball to share with his classmates. The children spent some time observing it as it could pick up any metal objects.

I found some cardboard boxes which come in different sizes. I cut it open. I wonder what the children could come out by using silver colour. On the other hand, I also found some silver wrappers from the cereal box.

I divided the 4 girls into 2 groups, while the 8 boys into 3 groups. Each group needed to discuss what they could draw on the cardboard boxes and it could relate to silver colour.

These were the groups and their idea:

-          Thong Xuan & Yi Xuan – a princess in silver dress
-          Huey Xin & Ee Wern – a baby pram
-          Yi Fai & Jayden – a silver racing car
-          Edmund & Adyen – a silver motorcycle
-          Pin Jee, Zen Hong, Kai Heng & Yee Hin – a silver robot

The children chose the sizes of the cardboard boxes that they needed.  I have some magazines in hand for the children to do collage work on their cardboard boxes. Each group started to discuss and draw out the outline of their pictures before they started to ask for materials.

I went round to see their work. I guided and assisted them as some of their pictures were pretty small. It could look more real and nice if it’s big.

Most of the groups manage to draw their outline and some simple collage work. We shall continue tomorrow.

Once they have put the golden dust powder on it, they used the glue to paste the two ends of the black stripe paper together so that it makes a round shape. Then once done, they started to put on their crown. Some needed some adjustment with the size of it. Most of them looked good.

The children brought their golden crown back home happily.

Art & Craft-Golden Crown (Part I)

Today, we started to make the golden crown. With the black long rectangular paper that I had distributed yesterday, we continue to decorate it with some golden materials.

I found some round golden paper plates. However, I only have about 4 in hands. So I got an idea by cutting them into triangular shape to be equally shared among the children. After cutting all the 4 paper plates only I realised that there's about 32 pieces of it. There were about 11 children in the class today. How shall we divided the pieces equally?

I guided the children to count the numbers of triangular shape that I have in hand and we tried to distribute it by giving each one about 3 pieces. The last person only got 2. The children discussed among themselves who should get the remaining 2 pieces of it. Some suggested the shortest and smallest person in the class to get it. I think it's not fair. Therefore, I asked for volunteer. Not long, then Jayden volunteered to take the remaining 2 pieces and he said that he has other ideas of how to do with it.

Once the children got the golden paper plate, they started to work on their crown. Some of them would paste the triangular shape as the pointed end of the crown while some of them cut the 3 pieces of golden plate to decorate their crown. All sorts of great idea came out.

The children only manage to complete parts of their art work today. I have got some shinning golden dust. We shall continue with that tomorrow.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Before we went in to our main activity today, I asked the children if they could think of an art work that we could do with the golden plates that I have in hand? Some suggested to eat with it, then some said crown for the princess.

Therefore, I get some of the children to draw the crown to see if they understand what their friends were trying to say. Unfortunately, the crown that they drew couldn't be recognized. As a result, I brought them down to the hall to look at the pictures that I had found online. Now, the children have some idea of what a crown looked like.

Since we were at the computer, I played them a story related to golden - Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Video Sharing: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

We have another 15 minutes left, I distributed each child a black colour long strip of black paper for them to draw some pictures on it. This is to use for the band of the crown. We shall continue this art work tomorrow.

Golden Necklace Art

I accidentally fell down and hurt my back. I was on medical leave to stay at home for the whole week last week. There's a relief teacher who helped me to guide the children to do some activity related to golden colour. The relief teacher managed to find a picture of a necklace. Therefore, she get the children to do cut and paste.

When I returned to work today, I thought of to do some extension activity about this golden necklace. However, when I showed the children the picture, they said it doesn't look like a necklace. It looked more like some golden triangles. Therefore, we tried to make some sentences according to the children's suggestion.

Finally, we came out with these 2 sentences:

1) There are nine golden triangles.
2) It is shinning brightly.

Immediately, I prepared the words accordingly and cut it out for the children to do sentence rearrangement. Most of the children could do this activity without much guidance.

It's a public holiday tomorrow. We shall continue with the golden colour activity on Wednesday.

Then I have a fashion magazine in hand - Women Weekly. We should be able to find some pictures of golden things in it. Therefore, all the children sat in a small circle and we went through the pages one by one. The children's task were to spot any golden things or picture of each page as I flipped it.

We managed to complete flipping the magazine and located a few pages to cut out. I cut out the picture carefully so that we could put it on the mahjong paper. Then I labelled them. Accidentally, I got the word - bracelet, spelt wrongly.

This is the poster that we did together:

After watching the video about "Colours on Water", the children asked if they could do the same. So I prepared some acrylic colours and a pail of water. After a few attempt, yet the colours are so light and couldn't see anything. Some children tried as well. Yet, the colour turned out to be very blur and no clear image at all.

Since it was not successful, we shall try it again when we got the suitable material. We moved down stairs to the school hall to carry out the milk experiment. I have some fresh millk, some food colouring and some dishwasher.
