Worksheet - Join the Dots

I have actually prepared 2 worksheets related to pumpkin for the children to work on today. However, after I have distributed the first worksheet which the children needed to join the dots alphabetically had taken up most of the time.  A few of them needed some guidance in getting the dots joined correctly.

Therefore, I shall keep the other worksheet for next Monday.

We learned about seeds. I suggested that the children to collect seeds from home and bring it to school to share with their classmates. For the time being, only Alice brought some apple seeds. I hope that parents could work together with your child to observe the different kind of seeds of fruits so that they could bring it to school.

Activity - Pumpkin Dessert

The children had counted the pumpkin seeds. Now, with the pumpkin cut and stored in the refrigerator, we have to cook it or use it up before it turns bad. Therefore, I wanted to try to make the pumpkin dessert with the children.

Basically, the ingredients that I needed for this activity is as followed:
- some pumpkin flesh, steamed
- some glutinous flour
- some sugar
- some oil

I have steamed the pumpkin before bringing it in to the class.

Then, I get the children to help to mash the pumpkin with a fork. The children recalled doing this during their potato mash recipe.

After that, I added in some sugar and glutinous flour. I get some of the children to help out to mix the pumpkin paste with the glutinous flour. At first, when it's soft, it's easier to mix it. However, when the mixture is getting more and more hard, it's quite difficult for them to even turn the spoon in the mixture.

Finally, when mixture is done, I showed the children how to roll it into a small ball. Therefore, I gave each of them some mixture and they rolled it into a small ball and placed it into the pan.

Lastly, I fried it slowly in the pan before serving it.

Count the pumpkin seeds

I have placed the pumpkin seeds under the sun for a day. Hopefully it's dried up. However, there's a lot of very soft seeds that I eliminated it out from the counting activity.

Then, I break the children into a few groups so that they could count it together with their friends. Some counted by using ones, some counted in fives while some counted in tens. However, before confirming the numbers, I recounted with them again. Then finally, the total number of seeds was 159. Germaine got the closest guesses.

Here were some pictures of them counting the seeds:

Cut up the Pumpkin

There were 2 pumpkins in front of us. The children observed the size and make some guesses about the numbers of seeds in both of the pumpkin.

These were the guesses for the smaller pumpkin:
Wei Xiang: 100
Germaine: 150
Jie Min: 200
Huey Teng & Alice: 400
Yun Han: 500

These were the guesses for the bigger pumpkin:
Jie Min: 22
Germaine: 30
Wei Xiang: 200
Yun Han: 100 million
Alice: 500
Huey Teng: 300

After that, we moved down to the kitchen to cut up the smaller pumpkin. We shall keep the bigger pumpkin for another activity.

Then the children helped to clear all the pumpkin seeds into the bowl.

Once I got all the pumpkin clean up, I put them into a plate and let it dry under the sun. It might take some days to get it totally dry up.

Book Sharing - Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin

At the back of the book, How Many Seeds In a Pumpkin, were some informations and facts about pumpkin. Therefore, we read through and had some discussions about it.

Then, I shared another simple reading book with the children - Duck and Goose, Find a Pumpkin. This interesting book is about duck and goose who went to look for a pumpkin at the wrong place until a grey duck told them to look for it at the pumpkin patch.

The children got to know a few ways to count their things such as in twos, fives or tens. I brought in a box of blocks and divided the class into 4 big groups.

The children could start to count their blocks one by one. Then after that, I suggested to count the blocks by two. Once they have done with two, I get them to count by five. Finally, they count by tens.

Most of the children agreed that counting by one or two were very tired. If they count by five or tens, it's much easier.

Book Sharing - How Many seeds in a pumpkin?

This book is a little long and needed to elaborate a little on the things in it, therefore, it took us a whole hour to complete it.

How many seeds in a pumpkin? is by Margaret McNamara and G. Brian Karas. This interesting book introduced the concept of comparison from size and numbers. It also given some suggestions on how to count the seeds in the pumpkin. It is quite a new concept for kids to learn. We shall carry out some similar activity before we really count the pumpkin seeds.

In the story itself, the children will line up from the shortest to the tallest. So before we ended the class, I get the children to line up from the shortest to the tallest. It's fun as the children hardly compare their height with their fellow classmates. It took them a while to get the line correctly.

Coleslaw Making

Today, I brought in all the ingredients that we needed for the coleslaw making. There were some cabbage, cherry tomatoes, a green pepper, some carrots, sweet corns and a small bottle of mayonnaise.

I get the children to slice and cut all the vegetables except for sweet corns. I cooked the sweet corns myself while the children were busy with their task. Once, the children had got all the ingredients ready, I mixed all them in into a big bowl and add in the mayonnaise. Finally, everyone of them will get a bowl of coleslaw.

These were the ingreidents:

The children needed to clean up the place before they could have a bite on the coleslaw:

These were the vegetables after the children had cut it. I mixed them up into a big bowl.

Wow, it's eating time! Some said it's delicious, while some kept complaining that the coleslaw is sour!
