Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Before we went in to our main activity today, I asked the children if they could think of an art work that we could do with the golden plates that I have in hand? Some suggested to eat with it, then some said crown for the princess.

Therefore, I get some of the children to draw the crown to see if they understand what their friends were trying to say. Unfortunately, the crown that they drew couldn't be recognized. As a result, I brought them down to the hall to look at the pictures that I had found online. Now, the children have some idea of what a crown looked like.

Since we were at the computer, I played them a story related to golden - Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

We have another 15 minutes left, I distributed each child a black colour long strip of black paper for them to draw some pictures on it. This is to use for the band of the crown. We shall continue this art work tomorrow.

Golden Necklace Art

I accidentally fell down and hurt my back. I was on medical leave to stay at home for the whole week last week. There's a relief teacher who helped me to guide the children to do some activity related to golden colour. The relief teacher managed to find a picture of a necklace. Therefore, she get the children to do cut and paste.

When I returned to work today, I thought of to do some extension activity about this golden necklace. However, when I showed the children the picture, they said it doesn't look like a necklace. It looked more like some golden triangles. Therefore, we tried to make some sentences according to the children's suggestion.

Finally, we came out with these 2 sentences:

1) There are nine golden triangles.
2) It is shinning brightly.

Immediately, I prepared the words accordingly and cut it out for the children to do sentence rearrangement. Most of the children could do this activity without much guidance.

It's a public holiday tomorrow. We shall continue with the golden colour activity on Wednesday.

Making a Golden Colour Poster

Jayden brought us a golden coin. It is a 20 cents. The children took turn to look at it. On the other hand, I brought in a gold medal to show it to the children.

Then I have a fashion magazine in hand - Women Weekly. We should be able to find some pictures of golden things in it. Therefore, all the children sat in a small circle and we went through the pages one by one. The children's task were to spot any golden things or picture of each page as I flipped it.

We managed to complete flipping the magazine and located a few pages to cut out. I cut out the picture carefully so that we could put it on the mahjong paper. Then I labelled them. Accidentally, I got the word - bracelet, spelt wrongly.

This is the poster that we did together:

The children had done quite some colours so far. We had also covered all the colours in a rainbow. Therefore, today, I got the children to discuss which are some of the colours that they would like to explore.

After a round of suggestion and voting, finally, the children decided the following colours. At the same time, I also arranged the colours in sequence according to the numbers of vote. These is the list of it:

1) golden
2) silver
3) black
4) white
5) grey
6) brown

As we got a little time left today, therefore, I got the children to tell me if they remember anything in golden.

They could tell me a few such as coins, gold medal etc. I added a few more in such as ring, earrings, broach.

The children were asked to bring anything in golden colour to share with the class this week.

Lotus Printing

The headmistress got some fresh lotus for the children to share today. Looking at beautiful lotus, suddenly an idea pops up. I might be able to use the lotus for water colour printing today.

Therefore, I quickly prepared some water colour for the children and some papers. Then we started off by having 2 children to do at the same time. After the children had got the lotus printed on their paper, they could start to decorate it.

Some of it were quite creative and beautiful.

Milk Experiment

I demonstrated the milk experiment to them last Friday. Therefore, today, I let the children tried it out on their own.

First, we placed some milk on a shallow plate. Then I put in some food colouring. Then, I dipped the cotton bud with the dishwasher and placed it in the middle of the food colouring. Immediately, the colours started to spread in round circle.

I passed the cotton bud and the dishwasher around for the children to try it out on their own. This experiment is quite beautiful as the colours will be mixed together. It also explained that oil contains in milk and the dishwasher could break it up.

Colours on Water

After watching the video about "Colours on Water", the children asked if they could do the same. So I prepared some acrylic colours and a pail of water. After a few attempt, yet the colours are so light and couldn't see anything. Some children tried as well. Yet, the colour turned out to be very blur and no clear image at all.

Since it was not successful, we shall try it again when we got the suitable material. We moved down stairs to the school hall to carry out the milk experiment. I have some fresh millk, some food colouring and some dishwasher.

We had a discussion on the next colour. After a round of voting, these were the colours and sequence that the children would like to have:

1) golden
2) silver
3) black
4) white
5) grey
6) brown

Parents could read up some books related to the colours that the children mentioned above. The children could share it with others in the class in the future.

Game - Colour Recognition

Today, we are going to do a game on colour recognition. I brought in 2 different boxes of colourful toys into the class. Before this, I also prepared the flash cards for the children to match the colours with it.

I divided the class into 2 big groups so that they could each work with one box of toys. The children take turns to take the colour flash cards from me. For example, Edmund holds a card says "blue". He needed to go back to the box of toys and collect about 5 pieces of blue toys. If he got the colour wrong, he would have to return to the box and collect the correct colour. Otherwise, he would be given another new card. The children will try their best to complete all the colours that I wrote down on the flash cards.

Most of the children could independently complete the task and also recognised which colour card they had done. Only a few of them got some colours wrongly and needed to repeat the search.

Looking at the clock, we still have about 20 minutes left, I wanted to play them 2 interesting video of how other people do with colours.

On the other hand, I also used the blue marker pen to draw some leaves on the grapes fruits for the children to colour.

Purple Grapes Art

I found some egg cartoon from the recycling bin in the school. Therefore, I used it for our purple grapes art today. I cut each egg holder out for each children to use.

We don’t have purple paint in the school. Therefore, we needed to do some colour mixing before we start. The children still remember the mixture of red and blue to form purple. However, the portion on blue colour was more than red colour, therefore, it turned to a very dark purple colour. The children said it’s the colour of the grapes.

The children took one of the egg holder each and started to dip it in the purple colour and print it on their paper to make the shape of the grapes. It looks easy, yet some of them needed some guidance in completing the picture.

The art was quite wet. As a result, we needed to continue with it tomorrow.

Huey Xin brought a purple recycling bag to show it to her classmates. Pin Jee brought a dragon fruit and he would like to share it with his classmates. Therefore we moved down to the kitchen to cut the dragon fruit and shared it.

Today, we shall focus on things about purple. Before we went deeper into the topic, all the children sat around and had some brainstorming session about things in purple. However, not many things that they could think of, therefore, I have to guide them along.

Things in purple that the children mentioned: grapes, plum, ribena
Things that I added on: eggplant, violet, yam, dragon fruit

Pin Jee said he has dragon fruit at home and he wishes to bring it to share with the class tomorrow.

Then after the brainstorming session, I got the children to stand up and looked around their class to see if they could search for anything that is purple is colour. They have a lot of toys in purple. The children enjoyed the purple hunt.
