Coral Reefs & Video on Squid

Today, I guided the children to explore a book on coral reefs. The children tried their best to express their description about each picture that they saw in the book. Some of them could describe it pretty close while some were really imaginative. However, it took us about 30 minutes to complete that thin little book.

Then, I played them a video on squid. Hopefully through the video, the children could understand the difference between squid and octopus.

We shall talk about octopus tomorrow.

Squid & Octopus

I used the book that Shan Lin brought earlier to read about squid and octopus. The children were quite interested with squid and octopus as they looked very unique compared to shark and dolphin.

Squid and octopus both have tentacles and they like to eat little fish and other crustaceans.

Besides this, I also brought in a story book that I have read to the children earlier - Bubble, bubble. The children could tell the name of the sea creatures better compared to the first time when I read this storybook.

Book Sharing & Stingray

Today, Yien brought us a book, Swimmy by Leo Lionni. It's an interesting story about a black fish that helped his friends to explore the underwater without being eaten by the larger fish.

After that, I played them 2 videos about stingray. The children were amazed to see so many different types of stingray in the sea.

Video #1: Stingrays - Reef Life of the Andaman - Part 5

Video #2: Manta Rays, Eagle Rays & Mobulas - Reef Life of the Andaman - Part 6

Then, I gave them a worksheet to work on. It's for the children to join the dots from number 1-14 to make out the picture of a stingray. After that, they coloured the picture of the stingray.

Mix Reading

Today, the absentees were still pretty high, I didn't want to start anything new. However, I still read through some readings about stingray and dolphin from the books that the children brought earlier.

I found an easy way to draw stingray from online and demonstrated to the children on the board. Then, I gave them some papers so that they could try it out themselves. Most of them could follow the strokes and drew the stingray as guided.

Book Sharing & Facts about Dolphin

Today, I brought a book to share with the children - Nugget and Fang by Tammi Sauer & Michael Slack.

The children had a good laugh at how Fang wanted to win back his best buddy, Nugget in the story.

There were some absentees today therefore, I played them a short video on the awesome facts about dolphin. We had some discussion in between the video as well.

Art and Craft: Shark (part II)

Today, the children continued with the unfinished art work from yesterday.

In order to get the effect of water, I had some darker blue colour A4 paper. I cut it into half and drew the wave on it so that the children could follow it and cut it accordingly. After that have pasted the wave onto the shark body, it looked as though the shark came out of the water.

Then, the children came to get a piece of black rectangular paper to cut the shape of the shark's mouth and some white paper for its teeth. The children glued the teeth on the black paper and pasted it onto the shark's body. Lastly, they were given a pair of googly eyes. The art work is done.

Here were some pictures taken:

Art and Craft: Shark (part I)

Shan Lin brought another small little book on shark and sea creatures. I only share one of her book and kept the other one when we needed it.

After that, we started off with the shark art work.

I gave each child a piece of rectangular newspaper that I have chosen. I told the children to cut out the shape that I had drawn on the whiteboard. Unfortunately, only one managed to cut accordingly while others were either too small or not in the shape that I required.

Therefore, I quickly cut some more newspaper and drew the shape on it so that the children could cut according the line. Finally, they manage to cut out and pasted their shark shape onto the light blue paper that I prepared for them.

Due to the unforeseen circumstances, the clock has already strike 4pm. We have to stop here and shall continue with it on the next day.

Book Sharing & More about sharks

Shan Lin brought two books to share with the children. However, after looking at it, I decided to read only "Frankie the Fish" and kept the other one for another session as it mentioned about seahorse.

Frankie the fish wanted to leave the sea, however, he couldn't decide if he could and he went around asking for opinion. Finally, after listening to all sorts of suggestions and opinions, Frankie the fish decided to stay in the sea.

I also share another of mine about shark - The Shark in the Dark by Peter Bently and Illustrated by Ben Gort.
It's an interesting story about how the fish managed to chase away the greedy shark back to his deep dark sea.

At the same time, I also found another educational video to show to the children.

We shall carry out an art work on shark tomorrow as the children were asking about it.

Sharks

After watching the video about the amazing underwater world, I believe that the children would be interested with sharks. Therefore, I introduced sharks today. Coincident that Khai Hann also brought a book about sharks that he could share with his classmates.

We glance through the book quickly and then, I played them a video about shark.

From the video, the children could see some of the shark mentioned in the book.

Lastly, today, we used about 20 minutes to get the children to complete their fish origami. Next week, when mostly of them had done their fish origami, I shall paste it onto the fish poster.

Fish Origami

Khai Hann brought a book to share with the class - Sea Life. This is an interesting book about sea life with 3-D effect in some of the pictures.

After sharing the book that Khai Hann brought, I get the children to sit in a big circle so that I could guide them to do a fish origami.

I was busy guiding them, therefore, not many pictures were taken for this activity. Most of the children needed some guidance throughout the process, however, some manage to get the concept and helped me out to teach others. We shall do this again tomorrow so that the fish origami that the children did could be pasted onto the fish poster later.

Parts of the Fish

We revised the facts about fish that we learned yesterday before we moved in to our lesson today - parts of the fish.

I drew a picture of a fish on the board, then, I get the children to come out to tell me which part of the body that I could label. Wow, to my surprise, most of them could actually point out the parts that we could label such as eye, mouth, fin, tail, scales and tail.

This is the picture of the fish that I drew on board:

Then, we went on to discuss the place where we might find fish.

Teacher: Where can we find fish?
Khai Hann: Big sea......aquarium
Shan Lin: Ocean
Teacher: How about lake, river and pond?
Children: Yes. (However, some did ask for the definition of lake, river and pond.)

Teacher: Could you tell me the name of sea creatures that you might know?
Max: shark.....sea snake.....eel (in Mandarin)
Khai Hann: stingray....lion fish....shell
Le Xin: crab
Yi Tong: jellyfish
Yen Rou: dolphin ......turtle (all in Mandarin)
Gaby: whale

I find that the children have difficulty in giving me the name of sea creatures and I suddenly thought of a video that I have downloaded some time ago.

Video: The Amazing Underwater World of Asia

After watching the video, I get the children to draw the sea creatures that they remember from the video.

Facts about Fish

Before introducing the facts about fish, I get the children to tell me things that they might know about fish.

Teacher: What do you know about fish?
Yi Rou: "F" for fish......fish eat fish food.
Gaby: Fin for the fish.....the fin for diving in the water.
Khai Hann: Fin for swimming......fish eats little fish.
Shan Lin: Fish live in the ocean.

After that, I went through briefly with the kids about fish.

1) Fish breathes under water using gills, not lung.
2) Fish live in the water.
3) Fish is cold blooded.
4) Fish has scales and fin, not fur.
5) Fish lay many eggs.

While introducing the above facts, I put in quite some explanation and drawing pictures on the board as well.

Before we call it a day, I get the children to help out to colour the topic - Beautiful Sea Creatures so that I could put it on the poster and pasted it in their classroom.

This is how the poster looked like:

I might guide them to do some art work of fish to decorate it a little in the future.

Voting for the New Topic

Hello, I'm back to lead the Starfruit class for another 2 months - July & August! Let's have some fun together.

Now, it's the first day of class, we needed to vote for a new thematic topic. At the very beginning of the year, I suggested topics for the children to vote. However, I believe the children were good enough to try to give suggestions this time.

After some demonstration given, the children manage to suggest 4 topics - animals, food, dinosaur & fish (underwater world). I gave some explanation to each topic before they could vote. It took a while to get everyone to understand the rules and regulations for voting. Finally, the topic - fish got the most votes.

Then, I wanted the children to suggest a topic for the theme. Unfortunately, it was not suitable. Therefore, I suggested a few for them to choose and finally, "Beautiful Sea Creatures" got the most votes.

Children could bring any books, or toys that related to sea creatures to school so that they could share with their friends during class.
