Worksheet: Name of Birds (part II)

Today, we continued with the worksheet that the children didn't complete from last Friday. Half of the class had done their colouring while half of the class had not completed colouring their birds.

Therefore, I divided the children into two big groups. One of the groups continued with the colouring of the birds while the other group cut out the picture of the birds and put them into a bowl.

For those who had done their cutting, they will get a worksheet from me and started to paste the pictures of the birds accordingly to its name written in the worksheet. Some of them could do it independently while some of them needed guidance.

Fortunately, all the children manage to complete the worksheet today and we shall move on to other animals by tomorrow.

Worksheet: Names of the Birds (part I)

I have prepared a worksheet for the children to do cut and paste. Firstly, the children needed to colour the pictures of the birds accordingly.

This time, I didn't want the children to colour whatever colour that they like. I wanted them to try their best to follow accordingly so that they could observe the different colour of each bird. Unfortunately, only a few of them could follow while most of them just colour whatever colour that they like.

The children only manage to complete the colouring session today, therefore, we shall carry on with this worksheet on next Monday.

Video Sharing & Names of Birds

Today, I played them a video about peacock opening it's beautiful feathers.

Video: A blue peacock opening his tail up close to the camera (HD)

From the video, the children also noticed the colour and the patterns on the peacocks' feathers. Max always tells me that it looks like eyes.

After that, I try to list down some names of birds that would appear in the bird park in Malaysia such as eagle, owl, peacock, ostrich, pelican, flamingo, penguin and hornbill. I have got all those pictures of these birds and I showed it to the children.

Then, I roughly drew them on the board and we read the names and the children also trying their best to remember the names of those birds.

After a few rounds of reading, I decided to give stickers as rewards for those who could recognise and read at least 3 birds from the list. For those who could read 5 names and above, they could even get to choose the sticker. Most of the children came out to take the challenge and somehow I noticed that some just sat there quietly. I do hope the children could take up the challenge willingly and not by forcefully.

Today, I brought in some black colour paper and some drawing paper. After measuring the length of the children's hand, I quickly cut the black colour paper accordingly. Then, I get everyone to trace their palm with their finger close together. This will actually to form the body of the ostrich.

Once the children got their palm traced, they could cut it out and pasted it onto the drawing paper that I gave them. After that, they will start to draw in those parts of an ostrich as well as the background.

Here were some of the pictures taken:

Worksheet: Parts of the Birds

Today, I have prepared a worksheet for the children to work on it. Before I distributed the worksheet, I randomly drew the parts of the birds that the children might needed to search for it later. This time, I didn't guide them accordingly on the worksheet and I wanted to see if they could try to relate the parts by themselves.

Out of my surprise that most of them could get the answers pasted correctly and only a few of them got it wrong. Some even tried to assist others when theirs were done.

Parts of the Birds & Revision

Today, I guided the children to go through the parts of the birds again. Therefore, a few vocabularies were being introduced again here : head, eye, beak/bill, feather and leg. This is to get them familiarize with the words so that I could prepare the worksheet for them in the next few days.

After that, I guided the children to tell me things or information that they remember about ostrich and flamingo that they watched on last Thursday. Surprisingly, many of them could remember some distinctive features of the ostrich and the flamingo.

Teacher: Can you tell me what you remember about ostrich?
Children: Black colour.
Children: Cannot fly.....Very heavy.......
Children: Lay eggs.
Children: Can dance.

Teacher: Can you tell me what you remember about flamingo?
Children: Pink colour.

Video Sharing & Mid Autumn Festival

Today, I played two videos about birds for the children to watch. We also discussed about the details and information given in these 2 videos.

Video #1: OSTRICH: Animals for children. Kids videos. Kindergarten | Preschool learning

Videos #2: FLAMINGOS: Animals for children. Kids videos. Kindergarten | Preschool learning

It is Mid Autumn Festival today; the children did their mooncake with the headmistress this morning. The children hadn't got a chance to play with the lantern that they brought to school. I take this opportunity to bring the children out with their lantern to the school compound. Even though it's daylight, yet, the children enjoyed lighting up their lanterns with the candles and walk around with it before we call it a day.

Note: Tomorrow, 16th September 2016 (Friday), is Malaysia Day. It's a public holiday. I shall see the children on next Monday.

Introduction to Birds

After the children had decided the new thematic topic, I quickly get them to give me a name for it. I believe the children like the words "beautiful" a lot. That's the reason why they named their new theme as "Beautiful Wild Animals". We shall focus on wild animals that they usually see in the zoo. I do hope to get them to explore more about those wild animals if the time is allowed.

We started off with birds. This is an area that I hardly do with the children for my past few years of exploring animals. I think this is because the children were not that familiar with birds and usually they will mention about tiger, lions or even elephants rather than birds. However, this time, I would like to explore the birds with the children and see how far can we go.

The children gave their opinions about birds.

Teacher: How do you know it is a bird?
Gaby: Because bird can fly.
Khai Hann: Because it can build nest.
Gaby: Bird can sing. Tweet......tweet..
Max: Bird has feathers.

Teacher: How many legs does a bird have? (Some said 2, some said 3, some said 4 and some even said 10.) Ans: 2 legs.

I get the children to tell me the names of birds that they know.

Shan Lin: parrot, pigeon, crow
Max: peacock
Gaby: cock
Khai Hann: woodpecker

Worksheet: Vocabulary of Beautiful Sea Creatures

I noticed that some of the children couldn't remember the name of the sea creatures. Therefore, I prepared this worksheet for them to do so that they could relate the names and the sea creatures.

Before I distributed out the worksheet, we worked on the board first. The children get to paste the sea creatures accordingly to its name on the board.

Then, after that, only I distributed the worksheet for the children to do it on their own. Most of them could complete it without much guidance.

More about Dolphins

Today, I shared a book about dolphin from scholastic. This book introduced dolphin as a singer, a racer, a protector, a fisher and a player. I believe the children understand these words and they could relate it very fast with dolphins.

After reading the book, we imitate the actions of those words done by the dolphin. The children enjoyed it very much.

Vocabulary for Beautiful Sea Creatures: fish, shark, stingray, octopus, jellyfish, seahorse, hermit crab, starfish, whale, dolphin

As I have spoken to the children earlier that I shall only introduce 10 different kinds of sea creatures and we shall move on to the next thematic. The children agreed to put a stop here. Therefore, today, we had some discussion and the children decided to change their thematic topic to wild animals. We shall start the new topic by next week.

Basically, this week, we shall sum up all the necessary information about whale and dolphin and we shall end the topic of sea creatures here.

Whales

Today, we read about whales. Some of the children got it mix up with dolphins. I show them some pictures of the whales from the book that Yi Rou brought earlier.

Then, I read them a story - The Whales Song. This is a story about a whale who had wandered off from his own group. It went around asking for help from other sea creatures. However, none of them could sing like a whale. A Manatee came by and told him that he could find out his own song by trying to sing it out from his own voice. Finally, his group came back to look for him after hearing his call.

I brought in some blue paper and some white A4 paper for the children to do a whale origami. After they had folded a whale, they could paste it onto the white colour paper and decorated it with other sea creatures.

There were a few more children who couldn't get the origami done today, we shall continue with it tomorrow.

Starfish

Today, we read some facts and information about starfish. The children were amazed to learn that some starfish has more than 5 arms such as the sun star.

After that, I brought in 3 boxes of different toys into the class. I also divided the children into 3 big groups. The children needed to make use of the toys they were given to form the shape of a starfish. This is not just to train their visual ability yet also to get them to work as a team.

Most of them were not discussing yet arguing with each other and couldn't cooperate with their peers. After 10 minutes, none of the group could actually form the shape of a starfish with their toys. I took some other toys from their class and form a simple one on the floor.

Immediately, there's a group of them stopped arguing and started to get everyone working in forming the shape of the starfish with the toys. I'm quite proud of them for being able to stop arguing and quickly got themselves up to complete the task given.

The other two groups who saw the complete task of the first group, they also quickly brought themselves up and quickly form the shape of the starfish with their toys.
