Worksheet : Word Search

Today I had chosen to do a worksheet with the children. It’s about the name of the sea creatures such as sea lion, stingray, anemone etc.

The children had their first experience of doing the word search last week, therefore, they could searched for the words much faster this time.

Most of the children could actually follow accordingly and complete the work.

Seal

We shall go in to another kind of underwater world creature. This time, we shall touch a little on this marine mammal where the children might be interested to learn. Before we move in too deeply, I showed them some facts about seal through the power point that I had prepared.

Facts on Seal
-        Can be found in all waters of the world
-        From the Arctic and Antarctic to tropical waters
-        Belong to the order Pinnipedia, which means “fin-footed”
-        Pinnipeds have four flippers one pair in front, and one pair in back

There are 3 different families in the Pinnipedia group:
-        1) Phocidae true seals
-        2) Otaridae fur seals and sea lions
-        -3) Odobenidae walrus

The features of the Pinnipedia group:
-        They are mammals
-        They are warm-blooded
-        Give birth and nurse their young
-        Breathe air
-        Have fur

Seals Diet
-        All seals are carnivores
-        They eat: fish, crustaceans and shellfish

Worksheet : Dot to Dot

Today, we were doing some number sequence. The children read 1-20. Then I drew some dots on the whiteboard with numbers. The children will have to join the dots according to the number sequence from 1-20.

From the demonstration, most of the children understand this exercise. Therefore, I chose a simple one for them to try. It requested the children to join from 1-24.

Some of the children managed to understand yet some of them needed guidance when they started to lose counting the numbers. After they had completed joining all the dots correctly, they coloured the picture. It’s a picture of a starfish.

What does the sea water taste like?

What does the sea water taste like?

Teacher: We had studied about whale and shark. So where do they live?
Children: Water.
Teacher: We had a pond the school. There’s water there. Did you find a whale or shark in it?
Children: No.
Teacher: So, where can we find them? (I drew a picture of a mountain, a river that flows into the sea.)
Children: River.
Teacher: That’s a good one. The river will flow out to … (I pointed to the sea but none of them replied correctly.)
Teacher: This is where the whale and shark lives.
Children: I know. Sea. (Finally, they managed to see the connection of the picture.)
Teacher: Do you know the taste of the sea? (The children shook their head)
Teacher: Have you been to the beach?
Children: Yes…yes…I love the beach. I play in the water. (I think they don’t remember about tasting the sea water.)

I had prepared some water in two different containers which one is just plain water while the other one added with salt. I asked the children to observe and see if there’s any difference in it. They said no difference.

Two different container with cups ready for the water tasting.

I started to give each child some small amount of the plain water to taste.

Teacher: What’s the taste of it?
Children: Sweet…

Tasting the 1st plain water. Happily drinking it.

Then, I gave them another small amount of the salt water. Before they could get a 2nd sip of it, some of them rush to spit it out in the toilet. I guess it’s too salty.

Looking at some of the children's expression, the water doesn't taste good.

Teacher: Do you know what taste is that?
Children: Yucks! (But still not sure how to describe it)
Teacher: It’s salty taste. That’s the taste of the sea water. Would you like to have some more of it?
Children: No. I want the 1st one. The sweet one.

Book Sharing: The shark in the Dark by Peter Bently

There’s a greedy shark which lives in the dark sea. When the shark is hungry, he will swim out to look for food. All the other fish were very scare and not willing to be his food. One day, when the hungry shark swam towards the school of fish again, they all went and hide at the shipwreck and asked squid if he could help them. Squid got an idea.

When the shark saw a dim shadow swimming towards him, he thought it was a little fish and might be delicious for a meal. However, when the dim shadow comes nearer and nearer, it appeared to be the shadow of a whale. The whale wanted to eat the shark. Therefore, the shark swam away quickly without any food that day.

As the dim shadow of the whale swam towards the light, it was just a big group of fish. The fish made up the shape of the whale and scared the shark away.

Art and Craft: Shark (Part II)

Today, we continued with the art of the shark. I prepared two circle round shape for each children to cut as the eyes of the shark. Then the children have to colour the pupil for the eye of the shark.

Once the children had done this part, they pasted the eyes onto their shark. Then they started to draw the sharks’ diet such as fish, octopus etc. The children drew their own and colour it. After that they tried to cut it out and pasted it at the mouth of their shark.

Edmund and Kai Heng needed some extra time to complete their art work today.

Book Sharing: Whale Gets Stuck by Charles Fuge & Karen Hayles

It’s midsummer in the Arctic where the sun shone all day and night. The whale loves to swim in the open sea. It loves to leap out of the water but unfortunately it landed on the ice floe and not back into the water. All the animals such as walrus, dolphin, narwhal, polar bear also came to help. However, none of their plans worked.

All the animals got tired and resting on the ice. The whale was sobbing. No one noticed that the ice floe was cracking. Then suddenly, all the animals fell into the icy water when the ice floe finally gave way. The whale was free at last.

Art and Craft: Shark

Today, we are going to do an art about shark. The materials that I had prepared are as followed:

-          A piece of blue colour paper with the outline of a shark being drawn on it
-          One small piece of paper plate with the outline of a shark’s teeth on it
-          Gum and scissors

Most of the children had some problem in cutting the corner and needed guidance. However, all children managed to complete the cutting of the outline and the teeth today. Only one of the children couldn't complete the cutting of the teeth and he shall continue next week.

Worksheet: Word Search on parts of the fish

Today, I prepared some worksheets for the children to go through throughout the whole underwater world theme. There are some worksheets on maze, looking for the difference between 2 pictures or looking for mistake in the pictures, word search, some mathematics exercise and matching the dots accordingly.

I chose the word search for the children to begin with. This is about the name of parts of the fish where we had gone through it at the very beginning of the class. It took the children a while to search for the words. However, most of them could actually search for the words after a few attempts and demonstration.

We all had a fun time doing this worksheet.

Book Sharing: Big Sharks Lost Tooth by Steve Metzger
This is about a Lemon Shark named Chomp who had lost his first tooth. He was wondering if the Tooth Fairy who used to visit boys and girls on land would come to visit him. The Lemon Shark’s mum wanted to fulfil his wish and wrote a letter to the Tooth Fairy.

The Tooth Fairy was touched with the Lemon Shark’s mother’s request and make a trip to Lemon Shark’s house. Lemon Shark was so happy to find out that the Tooth Fairy did visit him and gave him a shinny diamond as a gift.

(The children did send some Chinese New Year cards about a week ago in their Mandarin Theme Class in the morning, therefore, they understand what is a letter and how to send a letter. )

Book Sharing: The Hungry Shark by Lorraine Lee (Pelangi)
This is a simple yet interesting story about the hungry shark hunting for its lunch. With its simple and short sentences, the children could understand the shark’s diet in the ocean.

After that, I distributed a piece of blank paper for the children to draw their favourite sea creature that appeared in “The Hungry Shark” story. Most of the children drew jellyfish while some of them drew all the sea creatures that appeared in the story.

The Whale Shark

Yesterday, we went through some facts about a whale shark which is the biggest shark.

Children: The whale shark got sharp teeth.
Children: The whale shark eat people.
Children: The whale shark’s teeth like this. (They are doing the action with the hands as though showing me the teeth of the shark.)

Since most of the children assumed that the whale shark will bite, I showed them a short video about whale shark and then we had a short discussion about it.

Video Sharing: Whale Shark
This short video shows clearly the features of a whale shark. The children were amazed to know that the whale shark doesn’t have sharp teeth like other shark. Even though it’s the biggest fish in the ocean yet it doesn’t bite.

After watching the short video, this is the discussion that I had with the children:

Teacher: Does the whale shark got sharp teeth?
Children: No.
Teacher: Will the whale shark bite people?
Children: No. Whale shark no teeth.

Teacher: Whale shark is the biggest but it doesn’t bite. It swallowed tons of water in and absorb the food in the water.

Shark

We had done quite a lot about whales, so we moved on to shark. Shark is one of the animals that the children are quite familiar with. I believe this has to do with a lot of cartoons or story books that the children had came across.

We had a brainstorming session about sharks.

Teacher: What do you know about sharks?
Children: Sharp teeth. (A few of them said that in Mandarin)
Children: Got tail.
Children: Got eye.
Children: Can swim.
Teacher: What does shark eat?
Children: Fish. Jellyfish. Octopus.
Teacher: Where does the shark lives?
Children: Water.
Teacher: Water..hmm......there’s a pond at the garden of the school. Did you find a shark there?
Children: (Laugh) No…only fish.
Teacher: So, where does the sharks lives?
Children: (There were a silence across the hall, some just grin. ) Sea. (Ayden suddenly replied)
Teacher: Yes, the sharks live in the sea. Not in any water that you see. We can’t find sharks in our school pond.

Book Sharing: Sharks, Big, Bigger, Biggest by Jerry Pallotta

This is a book about all kinds of different shark such as the whale shark, the great white shark, the hammerhead shark etc. We only managed to go through parts of the books. We shall continue with it on other days.
