Art Work: Hermit Crab (part III)

Today, the children continued with the art work.

First I guided those who had not completed their pasting task yesterday. Once, I have settled them, I guided those who had done their part yesterday to continue by decorating their shells with some glittering dust and accessories.

Here were some pictures taken:

For those who had just done their first part of pasting, they needed to wait for the glue to get dry before they could move on to the decoration task. Therefore, we shall continue with this tomorrow. Hopefully, we could get everyone to complete their art work by end of the week.

Art Work: Hermit Crab (part II)

Today, I got the children to assemble the cut out of their palm together with the cut out of the shell. I have also prepared some pipe cleaner and tiny googly eyes for them to paste it onto their hermit crab art.

Initially, I demonstrated to the children how to glue the googly eyes and the pipe cleaner onto the hermit crab. Yet, it was a pretty difficult task for them as the glue will stick onto their little fingers and failed to stable in place. As a result, I have to do it on their behalf.

I only managed to guide parts of the class to complete their assembly of the palm shape and the shell. We shall continue tomorrow for the rest of the class.

Art Work: Hermit Crab (part I)

At the beginning of the class, I played 2 videos - hermit crab changing shells and the story of "sharing a shell" by Julia Donaldson.

Video #1: Hermit Crab Shell Change

Video #2: sharing a shell by julia donaldson

Initially, I wanted to get the children to print their palm onto a piece of white paper and they can cut it out. However, the red water colour was not sufficient for them. Therefore, instead of using water colour, I used dark red paper to trace their palm onto it and get them to cut it accordingly. Most of the children could do it while some needed some guidance in cutting the lines properly.

Besides that, I also gave them another piece of cardboard that I have drawn the shape of the shells on it. The children also cut it out accordingly.

Tomorrow we shall put all the parts together on a piece of blue colour paper.

Revision : A House for Hermit Crab

Last Friday, we read about the book on hermit crab. In order for the children to remember the story and the sea creatures that appeared, I get them to retell any parts of the story that they could remember.

However, the children could only mention about the names of the sea creatures and not much of the story. On the other hand, I also revised the name and sequence of the month with the children.

Book Sharing - A House for Hermit Crab

Khai Hann brought a book about hermit crab for us earlier. I read it to the children today. The book is "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle. In this story, the children also get to learn the name of the month from January to December. We did our classical reading sometime ago about months, the children were able to tell me the name of the month without much guidance. I am proud of them.

Then before bringing the children out to have a run, I revised the story by getting the children to retell the sea creatures that hermit crab met on his way. Most of them could tell me a few such as sea anemone, starfish, lantern fish etc.

Next week we shall focus on the worksheet and art work for "A House for Hermit Crab".

Seahorse Art work with cellophane (Part II)

I noticed that the cellophane can be torn easily. Therefore, I suggested to the children that they could try to tear the cellophane before pasting them onto their seahorse. Out of my surprise that some of them have not really master the skill of tearing paper and they have difficulty in getting the task done. I have to guide them one by one to show them the skill of tearing the cellophane properly. However, some of them were quite skillful and they even helped me to teach others to tear the cellophane.

It took the children quite a while to complete their art work today.

Lastly, I get the children to paste a googly eye to their seahorse art work.

Here were some pictures taken during the activity:

Book Sharing & Seahorse Art work

We started off our class by sharing the storybook that Khai Hann brought - Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle. Some of the children still remember some parts of the story from the video I played 2 days ago. They enjoyed the story very much.

After that, I gave each of them the outline of a seahorse that I have traced on the cardboard. They needed to cut it out and pasted it with the colourful cellophane that I brought into the class today. I cut the cellophane into smaller pieces so that the children could paste it all around their seahorse. However, only 2 children managed to complete the art work today. We shall continue tomorrow.

Dots to dots worksheet for Seahorse

Today, I have prepared a worksheet for the children to join the dots from number 1-17. It's a pretty simple worksheet and after that, the children could colour it. However, out of my surprise, some still need guidance as they miscounted some numbers in the worksheet.

I have also printed a sentence with some missing blanks for the children to fill up. Once, the children had completed the dots joining assignment, I gave each of them some jumbled up alphabets for them to spell "seahorse" and pasted it onto the missing blanks.

Khai Hann brought us the Mister Seahorse book today. Unfortunately, I didn't get time to read it to the children. We shall find a time to read it on our next lesson.

Seahorse

Today, I brought in the book that Shan Lin brought us earlier that she wanted to share about seahorse. Seahorse is one of the fish where the male will take care of the eggs until it hatches. The female seahorse will lay the eggs into the male seahorse's pouch and the male seahorse will carry it wherever it goes until it hatch into small baby seahorse.

I played them a video which show the male seahorse is releasing the babies into the world.

Video #1: Male seahorse giving birth at The Deep Hull

Then, I remember there's a book about seahorse. However, I didn't get to find the English version of it. Therefore, I picked a video to play from youtube so that the children could also listen to it. The book is Mr Seahorse by Eric Carle.

Video #2: Mr. Seahorse

We shall work on seahorse activity for the next few days.

Jellyfish art (part II) & Octopus games

Some of the jellyfish art was not completed yesterday. Besides that, a few more kids came back to school and they wanted to do the jellyfish art too. Therefore, I brought in the yarn and colour paper for them to work on it.

After that, I brought the children out to have the octopus games with them. This time, I can see that the children could run in all directions instead of just moving all towards one. It made me quite difficult to catch any of them. They had lots of fun.

Book Sharing & Jellyfish art

I brought in a book to share with the class today - Tiddler, the storytelling fish by Julia Donaldson & Axel Sheffler. This is an interesting book about the fish that loves to tell stories and he has a great imagination.

Then, I brought in some yarn and colour papers for the children to do an art work on jellyfish.

First, the children choose the colour paper that they wanted. They will be given only a quarter of the colour paper for them to draw the bell of the jellyfish.

Secondly, they will choose the thicker yarn to be pasted on the middle of the bell.

Thirdly, they shall come and choose a thinner yarn for the rest of the tentacles and pasted them at the side of the thicker yarn.

Lastly, they shall paste their jellyfish onto a piece of white A4 paper and they could added in other details for their art work.

Octopus games

I wanted to introduce some outdoor games for this theme and I found this game to play with the children.

In order to demonstrate the rules of the games, I became the "octopus" and all the children will be the fish in the sea. When the octopus captured any of the fish, they will turn into sea anemone and shall squad down. However, other fish could come and rescued their friends.

We had this game played for a few rounds before we call it a day.

Shapes and sizes of those sea creatures

I plan this activity according to the book that I read to the children earlier. That book mentioned that sea creatures come in different shapes and sizes.

Therefore, I divided the class into two groups and they needed to react to the sentences that I read to them.

For example, when I read a sentence -  "Some are long." The children would need to figure out how to present long. One of the groups gathered their friends to hold hands and make the line as long as possible. They fulfill the requirement of this activity.

Some are long.

Some are fat.

Some have five arms.

Some have five arms. (another group)

They acted as jellyfish.

Worksheet: Octopus

I have prepared a worksheet for the children to do which related to octopus. The worksheet required the children to count the number of hearts that an octopus has, or colour the blood of the octopus etc. I noticed that through such worksheet, the children get to remember the interesting facts about the sea creatures that they have learned.

Then, I read them a book about jellyfish. We might focus on jellyfish for the next few days.

Octopus Art

Today, we started the class late as I brought the children out to play at the school compound. After we learned about fish, the children were quite talkative when they were observing about the fish in the pond.

Then, I have prepared some circle and some colour stripes for the children to do their octopus art work.

The children needed to colour their octopus before counting the eight legs to be pasted onto the circle. Some of the children pasted the numbers of legs wrongly and got to guide them through the whole session.

Quiz on Octopus

Quiz on Octopus

In order for the children to get to know the facts of octopus well, I get them to group themselves in 2 groups. Then, each time, I will pick a child from each group and give out the quiz to see which group could get the higher marks.

If any of the kid couldn't get the answer, they could go back to their group to get help.

After the quiz, I have prepared an assignment for the kids to do. It's related to the stingray worksheet that they were working on few days back. The spelling of "stingray" were jumbled up. The children needed to rearrange the word so that they could paste it into the space provided.

Most of the children could do it while only a few needed some guidance.
