Salt Bottle Art

After watching the video yesterday, the children asked if they could do the salt art first and put the shade of colour till tomorrow. This time, I didn’t ask all the children to bring their own bottle. Therefore, we shall do it in a group.

I prepared the following items for the bottle salt art:-

- 2 packets of salt
- a dry small plastic bottle
- some bowls for colour mixing
- food colouring (variety of colours)
- some spoons
- a funnel

I put some salt in a few bowls with some food colouring. Then I passed it to the children to mix the colour.

Once it was done, all the children get their turn to put the salt into the bottle through the funnel. The children said the bottle salt art is beautiful.

What is blue in colour?

Date: 19th August 2014

What is blue in colour?

We had done quite a lot of on green, therefore, today, we moved on to blue. The children gave a few items that they think it’s blue in colour such as water, sky, whale, dolphin, blueberry, blue water bottle, blue shirt etc.

Then I get the children to pick a blue item from their class and share with their fellow classmates. Some found a blue brick, some found a blue pad, some found a toy etc. However, some found a different shade of blue. The children observed it and could tell which is lighter in colour and darker in colour.

After that I brought in some water paint – blue, white and black. On a piece of paper, I colour the blue in the middle.

Teacher: If I wish to make a lighter blue, what should I add in? (The children thought for a while.)
Children: White?
Teacher: Let see if it works.

Therefore, I put in some white to the blue. Immediately, it turned to a lighter colour. The children were happy to know they made the correct guess.

Teacher: If I add in black, what will happen to the blue?
Children: Dark blue.

Same thing, I add in some black paint to the blue, it tuned a dark shade of blue. The children requested if they could do this. Due to insufficient of time, we shall carry out this activity the next day.

I showed them some video about how the bottle salt art was done:-

The Pea and the Princess

The Pea and the Princess

The children showed me a storybook by Hans Christian Andersen from the reading corner of their class. They said there are some stories inside like the “Little Red Riding Hood”. Then I saw another story which suits our theme – The Pea and the Princess.

Therefore, I read this short story for the children before we moved on to another colour this week.

Book Sharing – The Pea and the Princess
The Prince wanted to look for a real princess to marry. Unfortunately, he didn’t find any and returned to the castle alone. One stormy night came a girl who claimed herself as a princess. The queen had an idea and brought in a few mattresses to be placed on the bed. Under all those mattresses, she placed a tiny little pea there. The next morning, the queen asked the girl if she had slept well. She said the bed was uncomfortable and she had blue black all over her body. The queen is delighted to know that she is a real princess who has such soft and delicate skin. Finally, the prince found a real princess and married her.

Game – Recognising the colour pad

We revised through the colours that we did so far – red, orange, yellow and green. After singing the frog song, we played a colour recognition game.

I placed some coloured pad on the floor. The children will walk around the colour pad when I played the music. However, when the music stops, I will call out a colour and the children needed to look for the colour and stand on it.

We had a few rounds. Most of the children could recognize the colour while some needed more practice.

Yi Fai & Yi Xuan managed to jump onto the red colour pad.

Huey Xin & Yee Hin also cling together on a same colour pad.

Green Frog (Part II)

Date: 14th August 2014
Day: Thursday
Time: 4:00-5:00pm

Green Frog (Part II)

The children are very curious about the lyrics of that frog song that I played them on the radio yesterday. Therefore, I brought them to watch the video and we could learn up the lyrics of the song.

Kids’ Frog Song
“Gung, gung” went the little green frog one day,
“Gung, gung” went the little green frog.
“Gung, gung” went the little green frog one day,
And his eyes went “aah, aah, gung.”

The children love to sing along. Hopefully with the video, the children could sing it at home.

After watching the video, I got the children to think of some sentences that we could add on to our frog’s art that they did yesterday. The children suggested some but mostly were “The frog is happy.” “The frog is a happy frog.”

I guided the children by using the lyrics from the song and these were the 2 sentences that the children came out with:

1)      This is a little green frog.
2)      The little green frog likes to eat insects.

I type out all the words above and cut it into individual words. The children needed to rearrange the sentences back accordingly.

These were some of the work done by the children.

Green Frog

Earlier some time, the children related green to frog. Therefore, today, I chose a frog song to share with the children. But somehow, the children couldn’t hear the lyrics clearly. I told the children that I shall write down the lyrics and we can sing together.

Today, I had prepared some frog art work for the children to do.

These were the things that I had prepared:-
1)      oval shape on green paper
2)      round shapes for the frogs’ eyes on white paper
3)      smaller round shapes for the frogs’ eyes on the black paper

Then I got the children to cut out all the shapes given accordingly. This time, I could observe that they could try their best to cut according to the line. Then, they would arrange the frog onto another purple paper.

Due to insufficient time, we shall continue with this frog art tomorrow.

Green Art with fingers

Book Sharing – The Greedy Python by Richard Buckley & Eric Carle
This green python is very greedy. It would want to swallow anything that comes its way, no matter big or small. At last, it even swallowed up an elephant. All the animals were kicking badly in its stomach. Finally, the greedy python throw up all the animals out from its stomach.

When the greedy python got much better, it felt hungry again. Then it saw a green tail and thought it would be its meal. So it started to swallow it. That’s the end of the greedy python.

Art and craft- finger printing
After the story reading, I gave each of the children a piece of paper and some green water colour. The children needed to decide what picture to draw on the paper. Most of them chose to do a snake art after listening to the story of the greedy python. I reminded them that the snake has a head and tail.

Yet, most of the children somehow just randomly printed their finger with the green water colour and not sure if it would look like a snake. Only a few of them could actually plan their painting.

When the water colour was dried, the children added in the details to their picture.

Thong Xuan: apple, cabbage
Huey Xin: banana, broccoli
Pin Jee: crocodile, grass
Yee Hin: avocado
Jayden: green pepper, leaf
Zen Hong: durian, frog
Edmund: pineapple, grapes, coconut, lime

Book Sharing – Little Yellow, Little Blue by Leo Lionni

This book was brought by Thong Xuan. Though it’s in Mandarin, I translated it when I was telling them the story. The children enjoyed listening to it. They learned the mixture of yellow and blue.

After that, I gave each of them a piece of green colour paper. The children needed to draw anything that is green on it. After that they will cut it out and paste it on a piece of white colour paper. Due to insufficient of time, the children only managed to complete the first part of the activity today. We shall continue with it on Monday.

Making Lemonade

Making Lemonade

Pin Jee & Edmund brought a lemon each while Jayden brought a slice of lemon. Before moving to the kitchen for today’s activity, we went through the steps first that they saw from the video.

These were the steps for the lemonade making:-

1)      Squeeze the lemon.
2)      Add sugar.
3)      Dilute with water

After that we all moved to the kitchen to start with our activity today. I cut the lemons into half. As I couldn’t find the juicer, I taught the children another way of squeezing the lemon out by using a fork. I let Pin Jee & Edmund do the squeezing.

These were the lemons that I had cut.

Pin Jee squeezed the lemons.

He squeezed with his might.

I taught him to use the fork to twist the pulp of the lemons for easy squeezing.

Edmund tries his luck.

"Anymore?"Edmund wondered.

Edmund observed how I taught Pin Jee, he also tried with the fork.

Then we have to add in sugar. I added in 3 tablespoon of sugar and tasted it. It was way pretty too sour. Then as I add in the sugar, the children counted with me. At last, we added in about 8 tablespoons of sugar and diluted it with some lukewarm water. Therefore, I put in some ice cube to make the drink feels more refreshing in this hot weather.

The children enjoyed the drink!

Lemonade? Lemon Juice?

I wanted to carry out an activity for yellow colour. Then I thought of making some lemonade. However, I didn’t want to bring in the lemon straight for this. Therefore, we had a brainstorming session about how to make lemonade. Interesting discussion was done and these were some of the note that I had jotted down from the children.

Edmund said he had tried lemonade. He shared his memory of it with us.
1)      Take a cup, put water in the cup.
2)      Cut the lemons, put it in the water.
3)      Put all into the refrigerator.

Yi Xuan said she had tried honey lemon. This was what she shared in Mandarin.
1)      Squeeze the lemon. Put water and shake it.
2)      Put honey and drink.

Thong Xuan: I had tried honey lemon.
Pin Jee: Ice-lemon tea.
Huey Xin: Lemon juice.
Jayden: Honey lemon tea (hot)

I showed them a video of how to make lemonade. We might be able to follow the steps and make some tomorrow provided if any of the children could bring a lemon to school.

Art & Craft - Bright Yellow Sun (Part II)

With the art work of the bright yellow sun that the children did yesterday, they could share the picture of their sun with their fellow classmates. These were some of their sharings without any correction done:

Thong Xuan: This is happy sun. This is a funny sun.
Jayden: My sun is so sad. (Why?) Because he has no friends.
Zen Hong: This is a sleepy sun. (Why?) Because I’m lazy.
Yi Xuan: Happy.
Pin Jee: My sun is so funny because he got friend. Then he’s happy.
Ee Wern: Happy sun.
Huey Xin: My sun is surprise. My sun is hot. My sun is very sad because raining.
Kai Heng: Happy sun.
Yi Fai: My sun is ______. (He thought for quite some while yet couldn’t decide what to fill in. So I let it be for the time being.)
Yee Hin. Happy sun.
Ayden: My sun got friend. (He said the friend is the moon.)

I wanted the children to try to make some sentences that they could write down on their bright yellow sun art. With some guidance and hints, these were some of the sentences that the children made. (They only needed to choose one from it.)

1)      The sun is shinning on the ground.
2)      It is a bright sun.
3)      The sun is so hot.

4)      The yellow sun is so pretty.

Art & Craft - Bright Yellow Sun

We sang the song – Bright sun shinning downbefore we start our class today. Wow, the children could remember the lyrics quite well.

Along with this song, we did a palm printing by using yellow paint to make a bright sun. I helped to paint the palm of each child. Then they tried to press it hard on the white paper. Most of them needed guidance to turn the paper around so that we could get a round shape of the sun. Some of their art work really looked like a sun. Very pretty!
